“violence right below the surface” – Drew Pisarra
Ah, so this is what must comfort me,
this lurid singing in the throne room,
this siren song of the manatee.
47th and Ninth has its Delphic distractions,
like pigment-heavy highlights
that push too hard to peekaboo.
I’ve never been one to hide my Roman nose
behind manicured hands or well-mannered
jibes. You do not possess. I do not rule.
The weather report is a half-formed opinion.
The end of the world is a hand-drawn poster,
a post-it note of porn with its sticky long gone.
I'm not claiming your eyes are sick.
The vision is real; the data is damning;
I rode the skeletal horse. My ass hurts.
Isn’t it great?
Isn’t it cruel?
Isn’t it done?
A participating poet in The Whitney Biennial 2022, Drew Pisarra is the author of You’re Pretty Gay (2021), a short story collection; Infinity Standing Up (2019), a poetry collection; and Periodic Boyfriends (2023), another poetry collection. His first radio play, The Strange Case of Nick M. (2021), was commissioned by Imago Theatre and debuted on K-BOO FM.
